A full-length documentary by Illinois-born Peter McDowell, Jimmy in Saigon explores the 1972 mysterious death of his eldest brother, 24-year-old James McDowell. The film touches on the universal themes of unspoken grief, family secrets and honoring those lost long ago.

Host Committee:
Darcy Addison, Mike Blossom, David Csicsko, Sarah Dandelles, Sonia Dumont & David Witonsky, Stephanie Foerster & Vincent Florack, Andrea McDowell, Sarah Mirkin, Sacha Mullin, Susan Noel, Mia Park, Bradley Renner, Carrie Sandahl, Colleen Sims, Adam Singer, Janet Carl Smith, Stephanie Smith, Claire Geall Sutton, Cherie Travis, Tim & Katie Tuten, Lilli Weisz & Jed Silverstein, and Lily Szujewski

The film, executive produced by Dan Savage, reconstructs Jimmy’s mysterious and short life through the memories and heartbreak of those who knew and loved him. It retraces Jimmy’s footsteps through the last two years of his short life, when he was living as a civilian in Vietnam. We get to know the young man who died when his brother, filmmaker Peter McDowell, was only five years old. In the process, Peter also gets to know himself and his family in a deeper way than ever before.

This event, a homecoming for Peter, who moved to Los Angeles from Chicago in 2018, will feature a performance by the amazing Nora O’Connor, songwriter and singer from groups like The Flat Five and frequent collaborator with The Decemberists, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird. There will also be local appetizers, drinks from the Hideout’s legendary bar, a silent auction, a brief talk with the filmmaker, and an exclusive, 14-minute “first look” at the film, which is slated for completion in 2020. All ticket-buyers receive one drink ticket, and a cash bar is available. Benefactors who purchase in advance receive two drink tickets and reserved seating for the screening of the film excerpts. Celebrated Chicagoan Mia Park will host.
