Tyranny of Dave
Tyranny of Dave
Tyranny of Dave is a band run by Dave ruthlessly, usually consisting of just himself but tonight joined by stalwart bassist Aaron Zemelko and guitarist extraordinaire Didi Afana. Dave is also one of the co-founders of Piñataland from Brooklyn's Antique-Garde music scene. With a steady stream of songs from the fringes of history to the near future he brings the weird old world into sharp focus for all to gape at and enjoy. He's currently working on The Decline of America Part 3 and a musical about Salvador Dalí at the 1939 World's Fair in Queens. His songwriting with Piñataland has been called “eclectic” and “fascinating” (New Yorker), “truly original” (Paste Magazine) with “remarkable lyrical and musical depth” (Amplifier Magazine). The Tris McCall Report called his performances “tremendously communicative” that “handled complex and nuanced subject material with unerring clarity.” His work has been compared to Camper van Beethoven, Tom Waits, They Might Be Giants and other sterling songwriters but retains a flavor all its own, tinged with everything from bossa nova to country to klezmer to Hawaiian without ever falling into cliché. His new single "Silence in Brooklyn" (B side "All This 4 U" featuring Nora O'Connor on vocals) is available at local record stores (Reckless, Dusty Groove and Laurie's Planet of Sound) or at http://igg.me/at/silenceinbrooklyn

“An artsy blend of ornate chamber-pop orchestration and the woozy ambience of early Tom Waits…a remarkable musical and lyrical depth…adventurous listeners will find them fascinating.” —Amplifier/All Music Guide

“In these troubled times, do we need a band that puts the chaos of history in perspective, one that finds the silver lining in the dark stories of the past? Perhaps, but Piñataland is not that band, choosing instead to plunge the listener into a strange, bygone world of failed utopias, crackpot dreamers and bizarre observations.” —Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn
Anna Soltys
Anna Soltys
Anna Soltys and the Familiar is a modern Folk Rock band with an entrancing new sound. Anna spent the first part of her childhood in Poland followed by 6 years in Paris before she moved to her self-proclaimed home, Chicago. It is the cross-cultural awareness that may awaken the type of delivery that is so unique to her sound. On top of the music, her lyrical, poetic content fills the heart with an awareness of the self we could all use a little of. "My goal as an artist is to explore and unveil the strands that bind us all together." Anna's unique vocal styling’s sit on a bed of seasoned musical arrangements melting together into a fresh and soothing kind of unfamiliar 'familiar.'

Anna’s music explores and embodies elements of pain, strength, honesty, and sorrow. From start to finish, lyrically driven simple melodies leave you with a sense of colorful melancholy.
In 2009, Anna Soltys and the Familiar won the 2009 Underground Wonderbar Talent Search and opened up for Toby Lightman and Terra Naomi. Anna has performed at many of the Midwest's finest venues as well as several venues in L.A, Austin, Tx. and New York.
