“Her voice is disarmingly natural...her magnificently transparent music holds tidings of family, memory, solitude and the inexorability of time: weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable.” —The New York Times

Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes — the debut solo release from Haitian-American multi-instrumentalist and singer Leyla McCalla — celebrates its re-release this fall. Named 2013’s Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times and Songlines for its haunting mixture of music and message, the album blends together American & Haitian cultural narratives as seamlessly as it weaves together Hughes’ words with McCalla’s music. “This is an homage to his life, his work, and also to the creativity he’s inspired in me,” explains McCalla.

A decade has passed since McCalla first set Hughes’ poems to her own compositions and Haitian folk songs, but his words continue to resonate as American culture persists in the search for its soul. For McCalla, the album was something of a personal awakening. It launched her onto a path of self-discovery as she defined her own voice as a solo artist and explored her identity as the daughter of Haitian immigrants. Remastered and featuring a previously unreleased bonus track, Vari-Colored Songs is a distinctive and soulful look back while pushing forward into a brighter unknown. Hughes' words continue to resonate as our American culture persists in the search for its soul. “It’s my artistic origin story,” says McCalla. “It’s who I am and where I came from. My musical identity has continued to morph and grow, but playing this music feels like retracing my steps to return home.”
