Musicians!  Do your tour schedule and/or recording commitments make it difficult for you to find a health care plan without a full time employer?  Do you have a story to share about the struggle to pay health care costs without insurance?  We’re looking for health care stories from musicians who don’t have insurance now and would benefit from purchasing a low cost individual plan on the Obamacare health insurance marketplace when it opens this fall.  We can do the interviews either by video or text, depending on the each person’s level of comfort with being public — we will take the stories however people want to give them to us.  Would also love to get folks who are not only comfortable sharing their stories with us, but willing to be at press events or speak to media as we talked about last week.  Folks can reach out to me directly – email or cell is best.  Please feel free to share/repost.  Email us at kduffy@cbhconline.org.  Thanks!

Plenty of action going on this week, but first a reminder that the debut of the Bellwether Market and Music Festival is just around the corner!  June 8th and 9th are the days to mark on your calendar.  In addition to great vendors and food all day long there are some amazing bands to come check out.  Bellwether features performances outside The Hideout and in the street by Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, The Paulina Hollers, Abraham Levitan, Ami Saraiya & The Outcome, Black Bear Combo, and the Low Down Brass Band. Plus, DJ sets by Damon Locks, Tony Sarabia, Peter Margasak, Reckless Records, and more!  It will be a fun weekend in the sun!

Tonight we are excited to see Immediate Sound Series is presenting Jim Baker and the NRG Ensemblewho will be playing Sun Ra.  This is also a book release celebration for Sun Ra/Ayé Aton: Interior and Exterior Space.  The book is being released by special DJs for the night Corbett vs. Dempsey.  Classy night to be sure!

Thursday, we are gearing up to have a dance party here with the great emerging Chicago artist Taught Abroad.  Starting out the show is Hideout favorite’s Software Giant.  Imagine Morriseey singing for Joy Division, with Les Claybool on bass and Kraftwork adding synths, that’s Software Giant.  And starting out the night is K. Serra, the pet project of classically trained Rachel Thomas.

Friday, starting at 6, we have guitarist Bill MacKay (Darts & Arrows) who’s known for melodic songwriting that runs the gamut from folk to rock to avant-garde and baroque.

Later that evening, we are going a lo-fi bedroom pop here with a fantastic line-up!  We have the enigmaticJimmy Whispers.  Sounding like a mix of Daniel Johnston and Kirk Franklin, his obsessive lo-fi pop hymns are amazing.  Opening is a Magic Milk, a rare band that writes songs about disappointment and terrible friends… that you can dance to.  Names Divine rounds out the bill,  from covers to originals the sound is de-tuned and re-tuned to imitate classic rock and roll records warped from baking in the sun for three generations. For this special performance we will have DJ sets by Bobby Burg.

Saturday, start your weekend recovery by coming to the Hideout Hangover Brunch.  The food is always delicious and donations are certainly welcome!

Later that evening is Brent Puls.  It takes only five tracks for the listener to learn Puls’ appeal—that his music is the lingering kind. Comforting, heroin soft and inescapably human, the release is akin to the jagged lines and splintered corners of city buildings blanketed in snow. Opening is Hello Death.  Hello Death formed in 2010 when Nathaniel Heuer asked three Group of the Altos band mates to work on some dark folk material he had been writing. Each member brings an important voice.  Starting things off is Forgotten Species.  WhenForgotten Species collected a bunch of fuzz boxes and crusty tape delays and hooked all of it up at once in their dark and damp Chicago basement, songs happened. From the riot of cables and tortured signal chains, melodies bloomed in the gloom. From squawk and clang came pop.

And of course we have our Saturday Night Dance Party.  This week, it’s Malt Shop!  The spin 50′s, 60′s, and some 70′s music .  Think The Temptations, The Miracles, Rick James, The Ojays, Four Tops, Danny and the Juniors, etc

Sunday we are closed.

Monday we have Robbie Fulks featuring Audrey Auld on this special Hideout staple.

Tuesday is the last day of the Chandeliers residency.  For this for special final evening the band will be joined by members of CAVE and Bitchin Bajas.  It’s been a great run and if you haven’t had a chance to see them, this would be a great night to do so.

We’re happy to announce the debut of a brand new market and music festival that will take place here onSaturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, from noon to dusk, it’s Bellwether!

Bellwether combines a creative menagerie of epicurean, purveyor, and experiential delights. It’s a celebration of locally produced goods, music, objects, and art; including records, speciality goods, vintage, home decor, and artisanal food. There will be food vendors and trucks, plus drinks to taste and tipple, including drafts fromRevolution Brewery, cocktails from Death’s Door, and wine from Oliver Winery.

Bellwether features performances outside The Hideout and in the street by Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, The Paulina Hollers, Abraham Levitan, Ami Saraiya & The Outcome, Black Bear Combo, and the Low Down Brass Band. Plus, DJ sets by Damon Locks, Tony Sarabia, Peter Margasak, Reckless Records, and more.

Also featured is film footage from Chicago Film Archives, NEDtalks, Adventure Sandwich and the Drunken Spelling Bee!  So much to do, learn about it here

We’ve got an action packed week here so let’s get into it…

Tonight we’ve are so excited to have an intimate evening with Jeremy David Miller of the Rambos and Ryan Anderson of Go Long Mule.  They will be joined by special guests throughout the evening for this cool acoustic evening.

Friday we’ve got an early show with the always hilarious God, Sex, Death, Variety Hour with Danny Black.

Later Friday we’ve got a stellar double bill with the eclectic upbeat sound with family party band sensibilities ofWild Jesus & the Devil’s Lettuce  and the always memorable Black Bear Combo.  There will be some spectacle to these shows that will have to be seen to be believed.

Saturday we are very excited to have our taps taken over by Revolution Brewery in support of Craft BeerWeek.  They are supplying the great beer and we have the great bands for you.  Co-headlining is none other then Sybris and the psych-peddlers and reverb rookies of Outer Minds.

The dance party that evening will be none of other than RETREAT who will help you dance your ass off on thisfirst Saturday of the summer season.

Sunday afternoon please join our dear friends of the Hideout, Jenny Hines and her father, as they raise money for their August Mt. Rainier climb to benefit the organization Big City Mountaineers.

Monday is another evening with Robbie Fulks  who will be performing Bob Dylan’s Street Legal with a full band.

Tuesday begins with the the punchiest thing to hit literature since Hemingway, Write Club!

Following that, we have The Chandeliers on their third night of their residency.  Joined by openers Bad Guysthis is one night of the series that you won’t want to miss.

Wednesday the Immediate Sound Series presents a solo piano set with Jim Baker followed by the NRG Ensemble playing Sun Ra.  DJ Sets by Corbett vs. Dempsey.

The Hideout

It looks like the weather is finally starting to warm.  There is no more magical a time during a Chicago summer then sitting outside on our porch, hearing great tunes and comedy while sipping on a Wooden Leg.  So, here is what we are offering to you this week!

Monday we continue our Mondays with Robbie series with the alt-country god Robbie Fulks.  Robbie will be joined by the effervescent Nora O’Connor for a fine evening of tunes.

Tuesday we present Fictlicious who will be offering stories and songs of sugar, spice, and things not necessarily nice by Jenna Morgan, Megan Stielstra, Scott Onak, Lara Levitan, Micki LeSueur, Summer Girlfriends, Danny Black, and Liam Davis.

Our month long Tuesday Residency Series with Janet Bean will be a special one as she is joined withEleventh Dream Day.   Eleventh Dream Day are a band who make music because they are compelled to. Their motivation is as pure as it was when they began. They have something to say and they need to say it. The band are true to the ethos of the punk rock that inspired them.  They serve as elder statesmen of the Chicago independent scene, get tickets now because they will go fast!

Wednesday night the Immediate Sound Series presents the improvised jazz of Frank Rosaly’s Cicada Music.  It is the record release for their self-titled debut record on Delmark records with a fantastic lineup of James Falzone – clarinet, Jason Stein – bass clarinet, Keefe Jackson – bass clarinet, contra bass clarinet, tenor, Jason Adasiewicz – vibraphone, Jason Roebke – bass and Frank Rosaly on drums.  Two sets of unforgettable music at the Hideout tonight.

Thursday is the Sonoi whose songs offer the familiarity of forgotten Sunday mornings while at other times pound out textured, thumping pop.  The sound of Sonoi might be difficult to describe, but that is what makes it so appealing.  Joining them, after a great show at our SXSW send-off party is the electronic vibe of duoMahogony.  Opening is the improvised jazz of Whirlpool.

Friday night we welcome the solo guitarist William Tyler who’s debut album under his name was praised by Pitchfork as “the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more” and established him as a critical favorite.  It’s a killer line-up with the bassist of Tortoise, Douglas McCombs, side project Brokeback.  Brokeback is a minimalist fusion of low-end jazz and a plethora of other influences, ranging from rock to ambient to hip-hop.  A rare Chicago appearance by Rebecca Gates kicks off the night.  Rebecca Gates is a US based musician, curator, artist and editor. She has released five albums, three as leader of the critically acclaimed group The Spinanes (Sub Pop), toured internationally, and appeared on numerous records by artists as wide ranging as The Decemberists. Akito Katayose and Willie Nelson.

Saturday during the day Jeremy & Nat’s Synth Get-Together-Groove-Out and Swap Electronics Spectacular.  Get ready to geek out on some spectacular synths and mingle about. Maybe swap a thing our two.

In the evening we are putting up the Pickin’ On The Kids 4th Annual Bluegrass Benefit for Intonation Music Workshop.  Get ready for the fancy finger fireworks from Bubbly Creek, Hayward and Miss Oneida.  These bands are coming together for a hoedown with elements of Bluegrass, Honkey Tonk, Americana, and Pop all supporting a great cause.

The Hideout Dance Party this week is with none other than Girl Group Chicago DJs.  Bringing together a wide variety of danceable tunes, get ready for a night of fun and girl power.

Sunday, we are excited to have Scott H. Biram.  Hailed by the L.A. times as “The one-man band is a tour-de-force of gutbucket guitar squabble, vocals so feral they’ll make you lock your doors at night, and a live set that goes down like a cocktail of whiskey, amphetamines and black-humored despair.”  Hideout favorite, The Lawrence Peters Outfit, is also playing their special brand of scrappy honky-tonk.

This week at The Hideout is gonna be out of this world!

Before we tell you all about it, we want to tell you about an awesome organic farming program calledPeasants’ Plot!

This summer The Hideout will take on its third year as a pick-up location for Peasants’ Plot CSA, an organic vegetable farm located about 50 miles south of Chicago.  The Plot is carried out by Todd and Julia McDonald, about 5 employees and 15 worker shareholders. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it is a way for people to know where their produce is coming from and how it is grown.  Participating in a CSA farm means investing in seed and labor prior to the growing season.  Your Investment pays off in the form of regular deliveries of fresh vegetables straight from the farm.

It’s not too late to sign up for Peasants’ Plot CSA!  Join the farm today to reserve your share of the harvest and pick-up veggies at The Hideout all season!

Later in the evening we celebrate the Al Scorch and the Country Soul Ensemble‘s new full length “Tired Ghostly Town” along with performances by The Grisly Hand and Kathy Greenholdt who is celebrating the release of her new album “When You’re Dead”.  

Saturday starts at 3:00 with The Adventure Sandwich Kickstarty Party.  It should be a ridiculous good time with exclusive sneak peeks of Adventure Sandwich footage, delicious sandwiches, and delectable imbibe-ables. Free entry. Donations (and all-around celebration) encouraged. Bring the Kids! And the Grown Ups! Eat! Drink! Dance! Donate!

Also on Saturday, for our evening show we are thrilled to have The Chandeliers. Putting a danceable twist on art rock, Krautrock, and avant-garde influences, Chandeliers’ kaleidoscopic electronic jams are artful yet accessible.  Opening up we have hazy art-rock sound of SHAPERS and some suggestive funk by Deep Sleep.

Sunday and Monday we take take a brief hibernation and are closed.
Tuesday is the last week of Bobby Conn and Monica Boubou’s month long residency.  This time around the theme is: epics.  It will feature John Ridenour (guitar), Josh Johannpeter (drums), Nick Macri (bass), Abraham Levitan (keyboards), Thymme Jones (horns), Allison Trumbo (strings and recorder), plus more TBA.

Bobby says, “Last year my old friend John Ridenour made an amazing record called “The Guilt & The Ambiguity” that I was lucky enough to help with. Since he lives in Urbana and raises chickens and children in his backyard I figured the only way anyone here would hear his great tunes live would be if I put a band together for him. Many of the band played on the record, and we’ll do a few cuts, plus some epic arrangements off of 2001’s “The Golden Age” and some groovy French orchestral pop by Michel Columbier. And much more. This is the big finale folks, don’t miss it!”’

Saturday starting at 3pm and going until 2am — don’t forget about daylight savings! — is The Hideout’s Annual SXSW Send Off Party! 10 Chicago bands that are headed to Austin for SXSW hit the stage for an all-day showcase with all of  the proceeds going to their respective treks down to the lone star state.  There’s been loads of generous donations made by Goose Island, Hob Nob Wine, Cushe Shoes, Intelligentsia Coffee, Big Star, KIND Bars, and SIR.  Below is  the band schedule and please spread the good word to help pack the place all day and night for these fantastic bands!

Sunday is the monthly Kind of Blue Standup Comedy Series.  March features Marty DeRosa, Candy Lawrence, Dan Friesen, and host Joe McAdam.

Monday is a sold out record release party for Wild Belle.  Their new album Isles on Columbia Records drops Tuesday!  It is highly unlikely that we will have any tickets at the door, but please track our Facebook and Twitter feed in case that changes.

Tuesday is the 2nd week of Bobby Conn and Monica Boubou’s month long residency.  This time around the theme is: musicals.  It will feature The Hairies: Ronnie Kuller (keyboards), Paul Brannon (drums), and Paul Parts (bass). This is cheating a bit, because by musicals I really just mean HAIR – The American Tribal Love Rock Musical. In August 2012 we performed as the band in the Hideout production of HAIR, and we had so much fun I wanted to do it again with some special favorite tunes. No, we will not be playing the whole thing, or even Aquarius, but the deep, deep cuts like “Great God Of Power” and “Dead End” . Plus, the most Broadway damaged tunes off of 2007’s “King For A Day”. Wear a home made medallion.

Wednesday is another Soup & Bread with the theme of Noodles, Dumpling, and Kreplach.  

Later that evening the Immediate Sound Series presents two sets by Dave Rempis / Mars Williams / Harrison Bankhead / Hamid Drake.
