This local trio has been a fiery live attraction for years, and though its members are hardly celebrities they've got solid credentials -- guitarist and front man Andy Hopkins has worked with Andrew Bird, for instance, and drummer Mike Bulington also plays in Grimble Grumble and Clyde Federal and bassist Geoff Greenberg has played with the likes of Husker Dudes and Andy Pratt. But after two albums I'd begun to despair of them ever capturing their blend of slow-hand soul, sexy glam, and old-fashioned hard rock on disc. Their new DUTY, though--now that's the goods. Producer Mike Lust doesn't wipe any of the garage grease or barbecue drippings from the sweet ballads and rowdy stompers, and "Duty .. 2" spends a long layover in the designated smoking area at Funkytown International Airport

Little Heater is the brand new solo record from Freakwater's Catherine Irwin and features guest appearances from Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Tara Jane ONeil (Rodan, Retsin), Elizabeth Mitchell and Daniel Littleton (Ida), Marc Orleans (D Charles Speer & the Helix, Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Jean Cook (Jon Langford, The Mekons).

CD version in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package. LP version includes artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon.

Catherine Irwin's second solo album is a showcase for her considerable writing skills both musically and lyrically as well as her singular performance style. Little Heater combines raw and unadorned vocals with lush countrypolitan-style productions: gorgeous string sections, pedal steel guitar and dense layers of vocal harmonies. Lyrics follow the themes of old-time music -- loss, despair, self-destruction and delusion -- but the references and turns of phrase are entirely modern and entirely Catherine's. As she did on 2002's spare and haunting Cut Yourself a Switch, or as she has done as the primary songwriter in Freakwater, Catherine aims her laser wit into the dark corners of the human condition.

Longtime Chicagoan but Brooklyn resident, Rachel Ries crafts songs of loss, love, longing and the unavoidable tussle felt by a soul raised in the country but trying to find a sound life in the city. Currently working on an album in Chicago with David Vandervelde, Rachel and her band (Ari Bolles and the Bivins brothers) will try the new record on for you, in all its bombast & quiet.
