MAKE X Book Release and BarBookQue
MAKE X Book Release and BarBookQue
Celebrate the highly-anticipated release of MAKE X: A Decade of Literary Art (Featherproof Books) with a BarBookQue, highlights from contributors, and live music. MAKE X collects memorable work published throughout the last ten years by beloved literary magazine MAKE and honors a decade of storytelling and literary rabble-rousing in Chicago and beyond. This event is free-to-attend, and the BBQ buffet is only ten bucks. Pre-purchase food tickets at makemag.com for bonus Featherproof books and more.

Around 3 PM, contributors to the book and friends of MAKE—including authors Kathleen Rooney and Martin Seay; visual artist John Sparagana; Chicago historian Paul Durica; NYC poets Christopher Stackhouse and Dorothea Lasky and Mexico City poet Luis Felipe Fabre—all via video; book editors, Daniel Borzutzky, Joel Craig, Kamilah Foreman; and many more—will highlight personal picks and/or tell us more about how their work came to be.

With Chicago’s most literary comedian, Adam Burke, as host.

A live performance from poet and musician Marvin Tate with guitarist Bill MacKay to follow. With rotating DJs, including poet Fred Schmalz, throughout the afternoon.
Adam Burke
Adam Burke
Adam Burke has been performing comedy in Chicago and throughout the U.S. for almost ten years. He is a regular panelist on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Voted Best Standup by readers of The Chicago Reader in 2014, he was also the winner of Second City's Up Next Comedy Competition. He has opened for a wide variety of comedians including Marc Maron, Hannibal Burress, Maria Bamford, Kumail Nanjiani, John Oliver, Tracy Morgan, Aziz Ansari, and many more. Burke released his debut album Universal Squirrel Theory on A Special Thing Records in 2012.
Martin Seay
Martin Seay’s fiction, essays, and criticism have appeared in a variety of publications. His novel, The Mirror Thief (Melville House, 2016) was included among Publishers Weekly‘s and NPR’s lists of the year’s best books, as well as the New York Times Book Review‘s list of notable books.
Marvin Tate + Bill MacKay
Marvin Tate is a performance poet, lyricist, published author, collected visual artist and educator. His recent collaborations with Sound-Artist Joseph C. Mills and Video/Performance Artist, Jefferson Pinder highlight his ability to combine spoken word and performance with other forms of mediums, producing outstanding works of juxtaposition and improvisation. In 2013 he collaborated with singer songwriter Tim Kinsella in a project titled Tim Kinsella Sings the Songs of Marvin Tate with Leroy Bach and Angel Olsen, released on Joyful Noise Records.

Bill MacKay is a highly-regarded guitarist-composer-improviser based in Chicago. He has energized experimental folk, rock, and avant-garde scenes with his radiant songwriting, and creative and unpredictable approach to the guitar—via his band Darts & Arrows and through collaborations with artists such as Ryley Walker, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and many more. His recently release solo album, Esker (Drag City), is "a rich and easygoing reminder that the American guitar tradition is a vast and detailed one.”—NPR.
