Angela James Residency
Angela James Residency
Angela James is celebrating her return to performing after having a baby by leading different ensembles every Tuesday night in March at the Hideout. James released her second full length record, Time Will Tell, in March of 2016 and gave birth to a daughter later that year. Each week of the residency will highlight a different concept and feature different collaborators.

All door proceeds of the 14th, 21st, and 28th will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Middle Brow Brewing is generously sponsoring the residency.

For the final week of her residency Angela James will be joined by Jordan Martins, longtime collaborator and drummer Charles Rumback, bassist Nick Macri and guitarist Bill MacKay to perform songs from her most recent album, Time Will Tell. Rumback, Martins, Macri, and MacKay will play an improvised opening set.

Angela Jamesโ€™ music brings to mind the rich, deep voices of classic country artists like Patsy Cline and Rosanne Cash with the narrative sensibility of more modern female troubadours like Neko Case and Cat Power. Traditional and hip, artful and sometimes avant-garde, her songs come from a place far more youthful and inquisitive than most people might think; a tribute to her uncanny ability to place innocence and experience in a broad context worthy of artists twice her age. Her songs suggest a sweet melancholy that aches with both pleasure and pain at the wonder of our shared experience.

James' debut EP, Down and Out, was released in November of 2012 and received a 4-star review from Time Out Chicago. Her first LP, Way Down Deep, was released in November of 2014 was praised by the Chicago Reader: โ€œ.....her lovely, rustic melodies are enhanced by excellent arrangements played by an impressive band,โ€ and selected as #6 in the Top Ten Chicago Records of 2014 by Red Eye Chicago.

For this show she'll be accompanied by Jordan Martins on pedal steel and keyboard.
