"When I started playing solo, I went through a period where I became obsessed with how little sound I could make live. How quiet can I be and still have the shape of the song exist? With the new album, I knew that I wanted a rock and roll record but I also wanted to bring some of that stillness in." - Paris Review
"The Float is an astonishing record by any measure." - Dusted
"The Float touches on everything from elegant chamber-pop to slow-churn guitar rock. Gates’ dusky voice and elliptical lyrics have never sounded more haunting." - Chicago Tribune
“Whether folding Memphis R&B into slacker bedroom laments or post-rock abstractions into catchy pop, she nails the ennui of lovesick transitions and physical displacements with a marksman’s aim. And she might just possess the sexiest voice in rock.” – Entertainment Weekly
