Espiritu Zombi

For nearly two decades the Eternals have fearlessly pushed forward, making music that defies convention or categorization. The group's latest album, Espiritu Zombi, is no exception—the band's most ambitious venture yet both sonically and thematically. Drawing on Chicago's fertile independent and improvised music scenes, the trio of Damon Locks, Wayne Montana and Areif Sless-Kitain enlisted seven additional musicians to create a stylistically expansive body of music. The resulting nine-piece suite challenges notions of identity and connectedness in the information age, calling out both the opportunities and obstacles we face as society moves deeper into the new millennium.

Rooted in music conceived by founding member Wayne Montana while traveling in Brazil, the arrangements were later developed by the core trio joined by bassist Matt Lux and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz. As the suite began to take shape, Locks tapped singers Jeanine O'Toole and Tomeka Reid to help flesh out the vocal harmonies, while Montana and Adasiewicz composed horn arrangements for cornetist Josh Berman, alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella and flutist Nate Lepine. After debuting the music in grand scale at downtown Chicago's Millennium Park in the summer of 2012, the 10-piece ensemble recorded Espiritu Zombi the following year at Electrical Audio studio with engineer Greg Norman.

Espiritu Zombi represents a bold new direction for the Eternals, and may surprise fans of the group's previous output. Dynamic and layered with choral interludes and improvised sections, the music swings as hard as it grooves, informed by sonic explorers such as Sun Ra, Eddie Gale and Max Roach among countless influences stemming from the African diaspora. Staking out uncharted territory, the result is a cautionary tale varied in mood and tone yet unified in message.
