This Week At The Hideout

Hi Everyone,

We are getting to that time of the year where we really start packing the place each night with one special show after another to finish 2012 with a proverbial bang — that is of course unless a literal cosmic bang happens on Friday with the Mayan apocalypse!  But let’s just assume that’s not going to happen so in the mean time here’s what’s happening this week at The Hideout…

Tonight the Immediate Sound Series presents: Witches & Devils: Playing the Music of Albert Ayler and Songs for Xmas. This group is made up of a remarkable septet with Mars Williams channeling his inner Ayler on the woodwinds, Josh Berman on cornet, Jim Baker on keys, Harrison Bankhead on cello, Brian Sandstrom on guitar & trumpet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Steve Hunt on drums.  These fellas are sure to bring the holiday spirit in the heaviest way possible.

Thursday we’ve got the…dare we say…”power trio” that is Cains & Abels who we are always glad to have here.  Also on the bill is Coach House Sounds founder Matthew Baron presenting his longest running project,Baron von Somethingand In Tall Buildings and Wild Belle guitarist, Erik Hall performing solo to kick off the evening.

Friday is hopefully not the end of the world so that we can bask in the glory that is the holiday edition of our favorite musical game show, Shame That Tune.

Later that night just in case the world is going to end for some bizarre Mayan reason…we’ll at least be going out dancing our asses off to the 10-piece Lowdown Brass Band.  This is their Hideout debut and where they will blast us out with their huge horn section and syncopated rhythms all night long.  They’ll be joined by the always eclectic music of Wild Jesus & The Devil’s Lettuce, and the modern root sounds of The Drastics.

Saturday we are honored to host a sold out Rock For Kids benefit show with Andrew Bird & Friends.  All proceeds from the event go towards the Andrew Bird Scholarship Fund.  The scholarship will provide a music student enrolled at ChiArts (Chicago High School for the Arts), who has demonstrated financial need, with private music instruction for one school year. ChiArts is Chicago’s first public high school for the arts focused on providing each uniquely gifted students with exceptional preparation in the fine or performing arts.  It’s been awhile since Andrew has played in the back room so we wanted to thank all of you who purchased tickets to this benefit and have helped raise over $15,000 with this show for the amazing scholarship fund.

Later that evening the dance party will be helmed by none other than DJ Supreme Court You may know him as one part of the soul music tag-team Sheer Magic who grace us with their insane soul records once a month at Danny’s, but tonight those jams will be at the Hideout and we couldn’t be more excited.

Before we go, we just wanted to remind you that we have a really amazing run of 6 shows coming up to end the year, and some hilarious comedy during the Tomorrow Never Knows Festival in January.  All of the tickets for these shows you see above are selling pretty quickly so, we hope that you can join us to either close out 2012 with some amazing music, start of 2013 with some laughs, or maybe even both.

Happy Holidays and much love to all of you from everyone here.  We couldn’t do this all without you.

Cheers,
The Hideout
